Tom the tree man arrived with his box of trees

Tom the tree man arrived with his box of trees

One of my favorite winter guests arrived today with his box of new trees for the fireplaces.  Every year they change a little.  I have my favorites on my mantle and added the big one Tom is holding.  The rest of them are spread out through the cabin fireplaces.  If anyone has a new idea for Tom to try in making trees send up pics and I will forward to him.  Thanks go out to Tom for filling up the mantles around the resort with his art work

When you have a resort you never know what is going to arrive in the driveway……

I will have to admitt this is the first time I remember ever seeing a cattle trailer in the driveway….. All the picnics and grills we have and I thought we were getting a delivery of old Bessie to enjoy

Not Bessie

Definitely not mooing

This was the most unique snowmobile trailer I had ever seen.  Guys told me the snowmobiles are much more valuable than the cows that usually fill the trailer.  They were quick to point out they had cleaned out the trailer before loading up.  Trails were reported in great shape!  They were sledding to Minocqua for a stop at the Minocqua Brew Pub for taste of ole Bessie.  I still swear I heard a Mooo in the direction of Birchwood last night

Snow is getting deep

Snow is getting deep

You know it is a good snow winter when the shovels are coming out in January.  So far we have just started the shoveling with the weakest roofs, the porch roofs and boat shed.  It is going to take more snow yet for us to start attacking the main roof tops.  So far they are doing just fine.  Shoveling roofs is one of the best ways to stay in shape in the winter, and have fun jumping off a few roofs you would never think of jumping off anyother times… shhhh don’t tell the work man’s comp guy

I had this picture emailed in from the group in Norway this weekend.  They took it the same time I took my sunrise pics in my previous blog entry.  I thought it was a fitting picture for today of all days

Northern Shrike

Northern Shrike

Only someone who spent his childhood purusing bird books could on a quick glimpse identify this bird as a Northern Shrike.  I had never heard of this bird before but Troy spotted it dive bombing out bird feeders after lunch.  It is a bird of prey and eats other small brids.  It was diving after the hoards of Golden Finches we had in at our bird feeder at lunch today.  It was the first time he had ever spotted it around the area

Quick facts about the Northern Shrike.  It looks like an innocent song bird but it is definitely not.

  • The Northern Shrike, like other shrikes, kills more prey, if it can, than it can immediately eat or feed to nestlings. Such behavior was characterized by early observers as “wanton killing,” but the Northern Shrike stores excess prey to eat later. Storing food is an adaptation for surviving periods of food scarcity.
  • The Latin species name of the Northern Shrike, Lanius excubitor, means “Butcher watchman.”
  • The nest of the Northern Shrike is an open cup, but it is so deep that while incubating, the female is completely out of view except for the tip of her tail.
  • Both male and female Northern Shrikes sing throughout year. The male sings especially in late winter and early spring.

I uploaded these pics larger for those that want a new screen saver pic.  I see the 2010 calendar pics here.  I took them this morning off the hill with the sunrise

My favorite pic of the group dedicated to Paul. Hey Paul this is better than a pic of the plow truck on your screen saver, took me a few weeks but I think I came up with the pic for your computer

Folks in Birchwood enjoying a quick breakfast and the sunrise before heading home on Martin Luther King Day.  We had tons of skiers here this weekend that all said the conditions were the best they have ever seen.

The Point in fresh snow

The Point in fresh snow

We had about 4 – 5 inches of fresh snow come down in the last 24 hours.  The extreme cold left and the snow moved in.  It is perfect winter days to play outside, plenty of snow and not so cold

Walking past Kaubashine these beautiful orbs caught my attention.  I had to stop in and see how they were made

I realized someone had taken the idea of ice candles we made in buckets to a new level.  What would make them round like this?  Most blog watchers have seen us fill up buckets of water and place them outside over night to make Ice Candles or Illuminaries.  My curiosity was up

Secret Answer

Secret Answer

Mary the ice orb queen had seen our ice candles on her trip a few years ago and did a little investiating on the internet and came up with this new and improved version of our idea.  She had never found a bucket that she was happy with the shape of, so looking around came up with this neat idea.  She used a heavy duty helium ballon the type they put in balloon arrangements and hooked it up to the kitchen sink

Mary was using green balloons but only brought these pink ones up on vacation.  Look like any body part to you:)  Sure looked like the title of this blog entry to me

I would love to know what the people in Shamrock think of the army of pink looking orbs that look like a certain body part. that are surrounding Kaubashine.  Now you know the rest of the story of nipples on ice
