Normally Fritz is battling Chicago traffic, today the ultimate in relaxation sitting on a bucket with a fishing rod and light snow coming down.  One persons vacation is everyone’s but believe me Fritz would not trade this spot for a beach in the Carribean (ok that might be stretching it, if it includes a margaritta)

I heard the sound of a small engine on the lake and realized it was one thing,  Al, Jimmy and Fritz were drilling holes on the lake

Headed down and had to go past Craig’s little boo boo from a week ago.  Kaubashine’s dock looks no better now than it did then

Peace and Quiet

Peace and Quiet

One of the reasons ice fishing is attractive.  No cars, no boats, no noise

The report for Tommy from Al and Jimmy is they have spotted a perch and quite a few Budweisers

High Tech icefishing.  Keeping an eye on the jigs from the camera.  Where is Fritz……  hanging out with Cliff in the other shanty and talking about spring

Birdfeeder Snow Report

Bird feeder Snow Report

I know there are many out there wondering how much snow came down.  So far at 7 am this is what is on the feeder.  Snow is still coming down.  John the groomer guy says 3 inches and the snowmobile trails will be decent for awhile.  X country trails this snow makes them sweeeeeet

Jimmy, Fritz and Al setting up fish camp for the weekend.  I hear they have heaters for the shacks and Fritz has his spot picked out.  Cliff may have to come down and have a beer wih Fritz and talk ice with him again.

In other news, Craig and Lynnette left in the rolling home for undisclosed warmer temps to the south.  Steve and Troy spent the day knocking down dead birch at the lake and nothing was destroyed or in need of remodeling after the chainsaws were put away.  Anyone see a connection in these 2 pieces of news

What does a rope tieing down Craig's tailgate mean?

What does a rope tieing down Craig's tailgate mean?

It means that he has been to either Menards, Fleet Farm or the local lumber company and someone has presented him with a deal that he can not pass up.  The recession has ment one thing to Black’s Cliff, good deals and Craig coming home saying “You won’t guess what I have in my car”  This time it was 2 new screen doors for Holiday and Wigwam.  I hear he has two more on hold for Norway and Red PIne

New Fridge for Red Pine, how much did he pay?

New Fridge for Red Pine, how much did he pay?

Stainless steal, 2 year old fridge with ice maker and cold water dispenser.  Orginally 1800 dollars.  It does have one small dent.  How much did Craig pay? This may be the deal of the year at 275.  Only thing it needed was a good cleaning and I can assure you Craig did not clean it

One small problem....

One small problem....

Fridge did not fit under the cabinets…  Quick cut with the jigsaw answered this small problem, think anyone will notice?

New Floor for Red Pine

New Floor for Red Pine

Red Pine got a little more TLC when Craig got the best deal he could on a new hardwood floor.  Carpet for Birchwood and the main house was also found discontinued at 1 dollar a square foot.  Bayview was voted as the cabin to get new linolium by Jen and Jenny at again 1/foot on top of the line linoluim.  Where does he get these deals….. his secret.  All I will say is after owning a resort his entire life he has his connections with folks who like to empty out their warehouses.

One thing there is no deal on is the new curtins for Wildflower and Restawhile.  After 30 – 40 years a few of them need replacement.  Lets just say the price of them gave me a new appreciation for our upholstry guy.  Craig has to work him over on a swap of an old pontoon boat we have in the woods in exchange for some of the price

Yet to be added into the stimulus package is all the new digital TV’s we had to pick up this week.  Due to the local channels coming through our areial we are one of the last holdouts to get ready to digital.  Will everything work tomorrow at noon…..  Stay tuned…  we have no idea

Looks like winter is not over.  We had light snow through the weekend that freshened up the ski trails.  I had 2 groups stay another day to enjoy the trails.  They said they were not perfect but considering the warm up they were just fine with the new snow we got.  Looks like we are going to do some more trail repair this week with a storm on Wednesday or so.  No idea how big it will be yet, lets hope for a 4 – 6 inch storm that would be perfect to getting excellent conditions again

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 18. South wind between 10 and 13 mph.

Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 31. South southeast wind between 6 and 9 mph.

Tuesday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 18. Southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming north northeast.

Wednesday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 23. North northeast wind between 13 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around -2. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 15.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -4.

Friday: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 19.

Friday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 3.

Saturday: A chance of flurries. Mostly cloudy, with a high near

Many have been asking for conditions updates with the rain we had early in the week and the light snow we have had

More light snow last night

We had another round of light fluffy snow come in.  At this point every 10th of an inch counts and makes everything look prettier

The Bearskin atleast looking snowcovered

Poe and I tracked down John the Groomer Guy plowing his driveway after our fluffy 10th of an inch of snow.  John loves to plow and takes every opportunity however small to escape his office and plow out the hardware store.  Black’s Cliff is not plowed nearly as much we have a 3,000 piece puzzle out on the dinning room table

Straight talk from John

Straight talk from John

John grooms the Bearskin on a regular basis and had unmentionable words to say on this G Rated blog when I asked about how the Bearskin trail was.  He said it had gravel coming through and definitely needed a good snow fall.  He did say the trails not near town in the woods are ok and rideable, but only a ____ idiot would drive their sled down the Bearskin right now.  Never say the Birchbark Blog does not give the honest trail conditions

Steve sweeping (not shoveling) last nights snow fall

Steve sweeping (not shoveling) last nights snow fall

I did hear more encouraging words about the X Country Trails.  I talked with a neighbor on the Nordic Team and he reported Camp 9 road was fine going out to Winter Park.  Camp 9 road is always an adventure in driving with no turn arounds, when it is mucky you never let your foot off the gas.  Right now it is fine and frozen!

My neighbor reported the trails as marginal but acceptable last night.  Winter Park is supposed to be grooming tonight with the cold temps and the new snow in the last 2 days hopefully that will bring it above marginal to atleast Ok – Good condtions on most of the trails.  Most of their trails are in the woods and snow in the woods did not take the hit that the more areas did.  So skiers should be in Ok shape for this weekend.

Reports are of a storm on Tuesday – Wednesday of next week lets hope that pans out and trails can rebound completly.  Ski trails will bounce back much faster than the snowmobile trails

Who needs a fountain pen

Who needs a fountain pen

President Obama has fancy fountain pens to sign his papers at a big fancy desk in Washington.  We are holding free pens from the local bank (Craig’s car is full of them) to sign our papers

You have to love family businesses the important papers signing over ownership from one generation to the next are done on the kitchen table with the kids homework and and apple in the background.  I wonder if President Obama has Sasha and Mailia’s home work on the oval office desk along with the stimulous package.  As most folks who got our January letter know, the resort torch was passed to the next generation January 1st, with Craig and Lynnette passing off the torch to Jenny, Katie and Steve and all our families to work together on.  It just took us til now to get all the paper work in order

Signing on the dotted line

Signing on the dotted line

Now the job of collecting free pens to for the office I guess falls on our shoulders

Temps went down and light snow came down last night

On a different note I have determined that the common cold was created in the bowels of hell.  Everyone in the Northwoods at the moment seems to be suffering from it.  Hot water with honey and lemon seems to be the favorite homemade remedy at the moment
