Oreo's advice today... stay by the fireplace

Oreo's advice today stay by the fireplace

Our most out spoken guinea pig (of 5) would like to offer the advice of hanging by the fireplace with snow still coming down today. She also is putting in a plug for folks to leave behind carrots and lettuce

I think the sun was out for this picture for about 5 minutes.  Frost has entered the ground.  Lucky for the deer the snow is not thick and they can still get to the acorns.

Mists and Clouds today

Mists and Clouds today

The fog was so thick you could not see across the lake and made it to thick for good pics so I headed inland

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween

From all the pumpkin carvers in the Northwoods hope you have a great Halloween.  We are headed to Hilltop where Mary Ellen gives the boys all the left overs from the summer candy supply filling their buckets in one swoop.  They promptly empty them in the car in grocery bags before heading off to trick or treat in downtown Minocqua.

Sunrise this morning

Sunrise on Lower Kaubashine. Time change this weekend will halt sunrise pictures for about a month so enjoy this one the next will probably have ice in it

Ducks out enjoying the morning

Not sure what type of ducks these were maybe someone else can identify them from the distance

Everyone's favorite snag

Everyone's favorite view

The view of the snag constantly changes but is always pretty. Snow is still in the woods at the point across the lake

I was driving home this morning and caught a splash of color out of the corner of my eye and I grabed the camera and creped over to see if I could catch this elusive bird just across the road from the resort. Below is a hint but don’t look unless you need to

See the flash of red on the ground

See the flash of red on the ground

I had never seen this bird on the ground before. He has rooting around at the base of a tree in the snow

The elusive Pileated Woodpecker

The elusive Pileated Woodpecker

After playing hide and seek in the bushes with me, he decided to pose for a great picture before flying off.  He gave me exactly 5 seconds to take the above and below picture before flying off.  You blink and these elusive birds are gone.  The sound of them drumming on trees is the only hint as to their location in the woods when you are walking

Caught on Camera

Caught on Camera

Usually my camera is nowhere near when these big woodpeckers fly over head but I caught them this morning. They are the biggest woodpeckers that we have in the North and are a neat sight to see

Woke up this morning to snow on the roof

Woke up this morning to snow on the roof

Can you tell from the last 2 posts I ran into a buy on birdhouses?  I love this old one, not sure how to attach it to a tree, just might leave it on my deck as a snow gauge

I was not going to post this pic, I was trying to flash the birchtree but it was too far away and the camera focused on falling snow.  Still turned out interesting

Time to go home......

Time to go home......

I caught Mike and Jean heading out the driveway this morning.

Mike and Jean enjoying Christmas Snow as they called it

Mike and Jean enjoying Christmas Snow as they called it

They were loving the snow and thought it was perfect snow like at Christmas.  They saw an eagle land on a tree in the snow and a loon call through the flakes.  They said the morning could not be more perfect unless they moved in to stay for the winter.  Sadly the town of Jainesville would not function if they did

Quiet October days by the lake

Quiet October days by the lake

Most of the leaves are on the ground except for the oaks.  Took this pic by the lake and I think it sums up the end of October

Winter wood supply growing

Winter wood supply growing

The precious supply of oak wood that Troy defends all year long for us to use in the winter is slowly making its way over to the house.  Ever want to drive Troy nuts, grab some of his oak from his special winter wood supply and burn it in a firepit.  I do not recommend this course of action, it has some interesting repercussions.

Duck Hunters Arrive

Duck Hunters Arrive

Fall always brings a few bird hunters from woodcock, ruffed grouse and ducks.  No they do not shoot the ducks around the lake but go to more uninhabited lakes and marshes in the area.  Deer Hunting is just around the corner November 20th.

Quiet Resort

Quiet Resort

It is the time of year to enjoy the quiet and a fireplace and we have several people up doing just that

Finally got a few bridhouses up for the birds in time for snow showers tonight.  I do have to admit that quiet days like this around the resort are some of my favorite.  Spring is work, Summer is family fun, Winter and Fall are time to slow down and enjoy the quiet.  Nice thing is when the quiet starts to get on your nerves Spring and Summer are right around the corner.  That is why I could not live in Florida I truly love the change in seasons that Northern Wisconsin offers.

I am running a Blog Special for the next 3 weekends. Bayview, Wildflower and Restawhile can be booked at 100/night for 2 nights or 90/night for 3 nights. Birchwood and Shamrock for anyone that wants the bigger fireplaces I will run at 115/night for 2 nights or 105/night for 3 nights for groups up to 4.  Sales Tax is 5.5%

So if the economy has you stressed and you want to escape to the woods these are the cheapest rates I will be running all year.  Linens are included but as usual bring towels (can’t do everything)

These rates work up to November 19th

This is the rumbelings I have heard about for Sunday.  Jake came home saying people at school were talking about a foot of snow for Sunday.  I don’t think that is true but we may see the first snow of the season on Sunday.  I am not counting the sleety icey rain we had the other day that drenched my laundry on the line

From the National Weather Service

ATTENTION WILL TURN TO THE COLD FRONT THAT WILL SWEEP ACROSS THE
AREA ON SUNDAY. 850MB TEMPERATURES WILL PLUNGE THROUGH THE DAY
ON STRONG COLD ADVECTION. LATEST RUNS DIFFER ON THE EVOLUTION
OF THE COLDEST AIR AND HOW IT MOVES ACROSS THE AREA...BUT THAT SHOULD
MAKE LITTLE DIFFERENCE WITH WINDY CONDITIONS AND MORE THAN LIKELY
FALLING TEMPERATURES DURING THE DAY SUNDAY. WAY TOO EARLY TO ADD THAT
DETAIL IN THE FORECAST WITH THE FALLING TEMPERATURES. FOR SUNDAY
NIGHT...WINDS BECOME MORE FAVORABLE FOR LAKE EFFECT SNOWS ACROSS
VILAS COUNTY. COULD BE THE FIRST ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON
OVER THE NORTH. WARM GROUND TEMPERATURES SHOULD TEMPER SNOWFALL
AMOUNTS...SO ONLY EXPECT A COUPLE INCHES OF SNOW BETWEEN SUNDAY NIGHT
AND MONDAY NIGHT. HAVE TRENDED MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES DOWNWARD FOR
MONDAY AND TUESDAY BASED ON NEW RUNS TODAY.

I have a 50 -50 shot at this.  I think the Downey are smaller than the Hairy Woodpecker so my vote is a Downey Woodpicker on the Red Pine by Kaubashine.
