Black's Cliff Resort's Birch Bark Blog

The projects, chores, and life of a family-owned, Northern Wisconsin resort.

Saturday was a wonderful day for a photographer with icey fresh snow in the trees.  Unfortunately I was stuck in a car running around to swimming and basketball tournaments and could only look at it out a car window.  Diane Deloria who was staying at Restawhile this weekend ice fishing caught these great pics.  Enjoy!!

I particularly love this picture above as I think it sums up what a quiet winter weekend is all about.  Escape and enjoying some quiet moments away from it all on the lake.

Thanks Diane, you have a job as a blog photographer anytime!

I could have topped these pics with sunset on County D on the way back from Three Lakes.  The ice was still in the trees and the sun was setting.  County D is such a curvy road when it is dry let alone snow covered and I passed on stopping along the way for pics.

Ice Report from Grandpa Gibson, blue gills were biting yesterday and the ice is about 26 inches deep.  His auger goes to 32 inches so hopefully this is as thick as the ice gets

It was a beautiful warm weekend to get out and enjoy the Northwoods.  We had folks doing everything from x-country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling

I was wondering what this strange blur was out on the lake

Would the real Poe please step forward

Poe had a twin up this weekend out chasing squirrels with him

It was even warm enough to scrape off the steps to get ready for all of Cliff’s fans going down to visit him March 1st

The number 1 reason you know it has warmed up is that Grandpa Gibson has arrived for some ice fishing with his new snowmobile.  Snowmobile means he can get around the lake better with the ice shack, so look out ice fishing pics coming soon…  Or Grandpa may just decide playing with the snowmobile is as fun as icefishing, but I doubt it

Steve and Troy got on the chimney sweep detail, with the brush and ladder.  Own a family business and the list of things you do never ends and requires many talents.

What could be blocking up the chimney that Steve couldn’t get around…..  Red Squirrel nest…. Raccoons putting up a barrier..

I just created the Black’s Cliff Facebook page.  If you are on facebook look it up.  Post pics, videos add what you want.  Kind of a fun way to share things during the cold winter months while waiting for summer to come

Maybe sort of.  As I am typing this blog entry I am connected to someone’s highspeed Wild Blue.  Some neighbor of mine is broadcasting wireless I do not know who, but periodically I pick up the signal especially on clear days.  I am sure the signal is stronger in other areas of the resort.  There will have to be some experimentation to see what cabins fall under the wireless umbrella.  So if you have a computer turn it on at the resort and see what happens you just might have connection.  Who is the mystery person in the neighborhood with Wild Blue…. no idea but my computer is humming with highspeed at the resort and I am soaking it up!

What could be at the postoffice?

What could be at the postoffice?

I heard a rummor that something was arriving from the southern realm.  I was a little worried that it would resemble a furry beaver or a friend of beavers.  Lois at the postoffice was happy to hand over the box… after having other boxes arrive for Black’s Cliff with strange odors of Lysol coming out of them, Lois was happy to hand it over

What was in the box?

What could this mean?

Gee I have no idea why Barb and Bob would send this to me.

Welcome?

Welcome?

Barb and Bob seemed to think that I needed to put out a welcome mat to my outdoor visitors that like to stare in the kitchen window at midnight.  I think I will put the welcome sign on their cabin’s porch before they come and see who shows up

Thanks Barb and Bob and I happy the box did not come with molting hair or the smell of Lysol…  What did happen to that beaver….. last I saw he was in Mary Ellen’s office

Do you see the splash of color at the top of the oak tree?

Do you see the splash of color at the top of the oak tree?

That would be Benjamin’s favorite kite stuck at the top.  Any ideas on how to retreive this without cutting down the tree?  We were flying kites out on the lake and the string ran out and off it went…….

Bearskin Trail Monday Morning

Bearskin Trail Monday Morning

Trails in great shape

For a short time we had these big flakes coming down which made for quite a winter wonderland.  Looking up at the trees was quite a site to see.

You could almost hear the big flakes hitting the ground

This pic is looking out by The Perch, it was coming down so heavy you could not see across the lake

Snowmobilers and skiers checking out today are reporting the trails in great condition.  We also had snowshoers out blazing trails across the road in the deep snow reporting in cold but fun times

We would like to report sucess at Basketball tournaments even with the referees spotted working in the opponents food concessions.  I would think that there should be a rule that ref’s for a basketeball tournament not come out of the stands from the home team…… Just my need to blow off some steam on the blog

Tom the tree man arrived with his box of trees

Tom the tree man arrived with his box of trees

One of my favorite winter guests arrived today with his box of new trees for the fireplaces.  Every year they change a little.  I have my favorites on my mantle and added the big one Tom is holding.  The rest of them are spread out through the cabin fireplaces.  If anyone has a new idea for Tom to try in making trees send up pics and I will forward to him.  Thanks go out to Tom for filling up the mantles around the resort with his art work

When you have a resort you never know what is going to arrive in the driveway……

I will have to admitt this is the first time I remember ever seeing a cattle trailer in the driveway….. All the picnics and grills we have and I thought we were getting a delivery of old Bessie to enjoy

Not Bessie

Definitely not mooing

This was the most unique snowmobile trailer I had ever seen.  Guys told me the snowmobiles are much more valuable than the cows that usually fill the trailer.  They were quick to point out they had cleaned out the trailer before loading up.  Trails were reported in great shape!  They were sledding to Minocqua for a stop at the Minocqua Brew Pub for taste of ole Bessie.  I still swear I heard a Mooo in the direction of Birchwood last night
