Black's Cliff Resort's Birch Bark Blog

The projects, chores, and life of a family-owned, Northern Wisconsin resort.

I am running a Blog Special for the next 3 weekends. Bayview, Wildflower and Restawhile can be booked at 100/night for 2 nights or 90/night for 3 nights. Birchwood and Shamrock for anyone that wants the bigger fireplaces I will run at 115/night for 2 nights or 105/night for 3 nights for groups up to 4.  Sales Tax is 5.5%

So if the economy has you stressed and you want to escape to the woods these are the cheapest rates I will be running all year.  Linens are included but as usual bring towels (can’t do everything)

These rates work up to November 19th

This is the rumbelings I have heard about for Sunday.  Jake came home saying people at school were talking about a foot of snow for Sunday.  I don’t think that is true but we may see the first snow of the season on Sunday.  I am not counting the sleety icey rain we had the other day that drenched my laundry on the line

From the National Weather Service

ATTENTION WILL TURN TO THE COLD FRONT THAT WILL SWEEP ACROSS THE
AREA ON SUNDAY. 850MB TEMPERATURES WILL PLUNGE THROUGH THE DAY
ON STRONG COLD ADVECTION. LATEST RUNS DIFFER ON THE EVOLUTION
OF THE COLDEST AIR AND HOW IT MOVES ACROSS THE AREA...BUT THAT SHOULD
MAKE LITTLE DIFFERENCE WITH WINDY CONDITIONS AND MORE THAN LIKELY
FALLING TEMPERATURES DURING THE DAY SUNDAY. WAY TOO EARLY TO ADD THAT
DETAIL IN THE FORECAST WITH THE FALLING TEMPERATURES. FOR SUNDAY
NIGHT...WINDS BECOME MORE FAVORABLE FOR LAKE EFFECT SNOWS ACROSS
VILAS COUNTY. COULD BE THE FIRST ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON
OVER THE NORTH. WARM GROUND TEMPERATURES SHOULD TEMPER SNOWFALL
AMOUNTS...SO ONLY EXPECT A COUPLE INCHES OF SNOW BETWEEN SUNDAY NIGHT
AND MONDAY NIGHT. HAVE TRENDED MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES DOWNWARD FOR
MONDAY AND TUESDAY BASED ON NEW RUNS TODAY.

I have a 50 -50 shot at this.  I think the Downey are smaller than the Hairy Woodpecker so my vote is a Downey Woodpicker on the Red Pine by Kaubashine.

Unloading the big pontoon boat

Time to take out the pontoon boats a sure sign of the end of fall.  Beach chairs getting a ride up the hill.  Now the question of how good Craig is at parking the 34 foot trailer

Olja looking to Steve for a little help.  What happens when you adopt a reformed Bear Hunting hound dog and try to teach her not to chase everything.

Olja fell off the wagon and went on a chase and came up with about 20 quills in her nose and lips.  Stick to rabbits and red squirrels they don’t bite back.  I think Olja learned her lesson after having 20 quills pulled out and Jen will be keeping better tabs on both Steve and Olja

Monster Crappie!

Monster Crappie!

This crappie was caught last week out on the Willow Flowage.  I think it was about 14 inches, and is one of the biggest crappies I have ever seen.  These boys were treated to a day on the Willow catching a tank full of crappie, none were less than 11 inches.  The Willow is down a little in water and the fishing is awesome.  The Willow Flowage is down either County Y or Cedar Falls Road 10 minutes from the resort.  I only have a few guests that wander over to it and more should give it a try

Walleye

Walleye

They also caught this stray walleye.  I have head the Walleye in the Willow are also good, they only caught this single walleye but with all the crappie they had they needed no more fish to clean.  As it was, we had shut off the water to the fish house and they were cleaning fish with a bucket of water and an electric knife

Alligator Snapper

Alligator Snapper

Spotted this 40 – 50 year old snapper on the shoreline looking for a winter den. The age of these old snappers is amazing they live almost as long as we do. We stayed a healthy distance from him.

Comment running through Poe’s head… The car is so much more comfortable and if you make one more hard turn the snack I had at Kaubashine may be coming up. Time to go in!

Grace and Rob from my previous post also sent me these awesome loons in the mist. They have lost their black and white look but you can’t tell from the pics. They should be heading out soon for the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks for sharing these great pics
