Oreo's advice today... stay by the fireplace

Oreo's advice today stay by the fireplace

Our most out spoken guinea pig (of 5) would like to offer the advice of hanging by the fireplace with snow still coming down today. She also is putting in a plug for folks to leave behind carrots and lettuce

I think the sun was out for this picture for about 5 minutes.  Frost has entered the ground.  Lucky for the deer the snow is not thick and they can still get to the acorns.

How the sunrise started

This will be the last time we see the sun for a few days.  Snow rain and sleet is on the way, typical November weather.

What I went through for this picture..  I saw this buck a couple of days ago and did not have the camera along.  This morning I spotted him by the garage at Blackwood.  He was quietly walking slowly through the woods.  I stopped in the worse section of Lower Kaubashine in the curves and pulled over as far as I could praying there was no car coming or logging truck.  Grabbed my purse where the camera was as the deer kept creeping through the woods.  Got the camera disentangled from the contents of my purse, and the batteries fell out of the bottom of the camera.  Deer keeps creeping and I fumble to get the batteries back in the camera with an eye on the deer and an eye on the blind corner right behind me in the road, listening for the sound of the logging truck.  Finally got the camera on and caught these pics.  Enjoy

I think he wanted his picture taken

Coolest boat to ever cruise Lower Kaubashine

Coolest boat to ever cruise Lower Kaubashine

For those old Black’s Cliff resort folks, the above picture will bring back some of your favorite summer memories.  This boat dates back to 1950’s when Maynard bought it as the first and only Black’s Cliff Ski Boat.  It pulled more first time skiers than the Minocqua Bats ever have.  Kids were no problem the older we got the more everyone kept an eye on their weight never wanting to be too heavy for the summer that the ski boat couldn’t pull them up.  I am sure others can tell their favorite ski boat story (keep them clean I know there are bikni top story’s from a few summer boys out there:)  The late 80’s saw the end of the glorious ski boat days when insurance rates made it impossible for us to offering water skiing every afternoon at 1pm sharp.  I am sure I lost some hearing from the hours spent behind this boat but it was well worth it.

The boat has had motor issues the last few years and has not been in, in over 5 years.  Craig spent a little money on the motor this summer hoping to have it in in August but did not make it.  Instead picked November 1st to put it in before winter to test out the new clutch dog.  Will the motor work…. my bet 50 – 50

Ummm Grandpa I think you forgot a rope

Jake and Matt out in the boat for its launch at Hilltop.  Craig forgot to attach a rope to the boat as it went off the trailer.  Start paddling

Where is the key for the electric start?

Where is the key for the electric start?

Electric start, who needs electric start that is for whozies.  It has always been a pull start 40 horse.  Ever pull started a 40 horse?  Ask any of the Black’s why they have such good arms and they will say from all the pulls they did on this motor.  I know I could have won an arm wrestling conest in my teens after a summer of taking skiers

Hey Jake did your grandpa remember to put the plug in?  Hold on full speed is about to commence

Yaaaaa Hooooooooooo

Yaaaaa Hooooooooooo

I have never driven another boat that can corner like the ski boat.  Everyone else can spend thousands of dollars on fancy inboards, I know of no one who has driven this boat who would trade it for an inboard

This is for Paul wish you were here

This is for Paul wish you were here

Well maybe not, the boat might not have survived Paul putting it through its paces the way he used to drive.

I hope this entry brought a smile and memories to a few people out there.  And made a few middle aged ladies wonder what ever happened to that bikini top did it sink to the bottom of the lake?

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween

From all the pumpkin carvers in the Northwoods hope you have a great Halloween.  We are headed to Hilltop where Mary Ellen gives the boys all the left overs from the summer candy supply filling their buckets in one swoop.  They promptly empty them in the car in grocery bags before heading off to trick or treat in downtown Minocqua.

The Victim

The Victim

This black squirrel along with his cousins the gray squirrels would like to lodge a complaint against their very distant cousin the red squirrels.  I witnessed the harassment from the kitchen window.  The red squirrels were chasing the black and grays and were aiming for their unmentionables.  I have heard from 3 different sources that the red’s drive off the other squirrels by snipping off parts.  Sure looked like that was happening yesterday and this black squirrel has a definite look of fear in his eye and it is not from Poe.
