Black's Cliff Resort's Birch Bark Blog

The projects, chores, and life of a family-owned, Northern Wisconsin resort.

Kate Coyle shared this picture of Norway last weekend in the fresh snow

The snow has melted since then but it was pretty for a day

It has warmed up enough for the guys to take most of the boats out of the water.

Quiet days on Lower Kaubashine

We had a bit of snow come down this weekend.  Thankfully by this morning it has all melted.

Before the snow came we were enjoying some late fall colors and working on a few things

The green boats got washed.  Waiting for a few volunteers to stack them for winter

Steve and Troy were hard at work on the building

Straight walls make the building inspector happy

Setting the corners

Time to put the skid steer to work.  Deciding the best way to get things flat

Steve was having fun

Next was setting the supports in the ground.  Steve called in help from his friend Darby

It helps when your friend has a post hole digger

We have a several cabins open this next weekend if you want to enjoy some end of fall views

Minocqua has a great Haunted House open this weekend and a new escape room in the basement of Gaslight Square if you want to enjoy some Northwoods Halloween fun

The yellow ball of the sun finally made an appearance today.  After all the rain and cloudy weather this was a welcome change

I have been hinting at a project we have started at the resort.  Well here is the long awaited update.  What could it be?

It all started a couple of weeks ago with the cleaning up and clearing of trees in the open area on the road to Eagles Nest.  Steve and Troy took out a few more trees to make room for a storage building we are putting up in the area.  Sorry no it is not a new cabin, don’t tempt Steve with those words as he is always planning.  This winter or pontoon boats all 4 of them will be stored away in a new building

But it did involve renting fun big machines.  First up was a back hoe to take out all the stumps

Steve quickly learned back hoes are fun.  He got the hang of it quickly as Troy cleaned up behind him

Lots of stumps were pulled

Then came the truck from Menards with the new building material on it

Today it is the skid steer.  Steve is having a bit too much fun with these new machines.  I am waiting for him to find one on Craig’s List

I like this one too!  And I have plans beyond the building site if we have time

Skid steers are great for filling in pot holes we found out

Back to the main job on this beatiful day leveling out the building site.  Getting ready to build.  Stay tuned building starts tomorrow I hear

This weekend we have 2 cabins left we will take 2 night minimum stays now.  We also have 8 cabins open for the weekend of October 27th if you need to escape to the Northwoods and see what is going on for yourself

My Christmas sock yarn just arrived.  I will post pictures of it next week if anyone wants to order any.  I have time for just a couple more Christmas Stockings if you were thinking of ordering some let me know they are 60 each with name on.

We have had snow on and off all weekend.  The white snow in the colors has been pretty but we are not ready for it to be this cold yet

No Green Bay Packers playing and it was time for a walk in the woods

Fresh leaves all over the trail

We headed down the orange trail today

Beautiful views along the trail enjoy

Mack patiently waiting for us to catch up

Honestly you people take forever!

More views for Mack to enjoy

I will give this hint to a hidden find along the trail.  If you see this marker at the end of a log you are close to the lady of the swamp.  Stop in and look around to find her

You never know what you will find in the swamp

On the way back the snow started coming down again

Time to find the wood stove

Steady rain this week with the colors.  Thankfully it should be drying out next week a bit.  It was time to close down the beach and put things away

Penny sad to see her swimming hole closing up shop

Steve happy to close up shop before he cold comes and no more wet swimming dog jumping in his car

Time to warm up by the fire before taking in the rest.

Stay tuned for the big project of fall.  Involves a long receipt, a back hoe and a skid steer to start with

Taking a short walk through the woods on the red trail anytime of year is great.  The fall though is the best

Enjoy these pics taken this afternoon

I took a spin around the lake in the old ski boat with Joanie and John Nolan to see the colors stopping at the point and running into Jimmy and Fritz Cikowski fishing on the lake.  Enjoy the pictures

I am importing these beautiful maple pictures larger than I have in the past.  I have had trouble with my iPhone importing pictures to small to my computer and my computer exporting them to the blog on the small side.  click on the picture if you can not see it in full size.  I hope you enjoy

We had a beautiful and busy weekend in the Northwoods.  The warm temps have made for some beautiful sunrises on the lake

We started out the weekend with a great fish fry with friends, Gloria and Rich Snodgrass at the Heart 2 restaurant in Arbor Vitae.  It is really a good fish fry if you are looking for a new place to go.  They have the usual cod along with walleye and perch.  Deep fried, baked, lemon pepper and cajun are the options

I went cajun walleye and was very happy with it.  Just 15 minutes from the resort

Then we were off to a wedding of Dawn and Buck Cass’s oldest son John in Appleton.  Dawn many remember from the last 70’s and 80’s who worked at the resort for many years.  She possesses the highest pinball score ever seen at over 200,000.  The wedding was a great time with friends and a bit of dancing.  Be careful of ever playing the song Cotton Eyed Joe near one of the people in this picture because what happens to her feet.  Not saying who

Big Congrats to John and Molly Cass on their life together from your family in Minocqua.  Thanks for including all of us on your big day it was very special
