Ususally this crew is bigger. Every year they dress up the beef for TJ’s Butcher Block with their antics and costumes. Last year they were the ugliest and funniest cheer leaders ever aloud to put on a uniform. This year I hear the theme is back to PIrates. They are missing their ring leader Tia, but the show must go on and the beef is being cooked

I have no idea I left before they got it together. I did smell grilling steak an hour later. Pictures of the pirate take over of Minocqua coming at the end of the weekend

This is the maple tree by Birchwood’s porch. We are at about 40% of the trees changing. Hight of color will be in the next week. There is no better time to be at the resort

With temps hitting 80 today and 70 over the weekend it is a great time to be in the Northwoods. This is the cure for watching too much CNN lately. I am tempted to invite Washington to Black’s Cliff have everyone relax around a campfire and come up with a solution to the Big Bail Out. If they start fighting or shouting Poe can come over and give them one of the same looks that he gives me when I leave the driveway without him.

Not the best picture but the best I could get from a distance.  The loons are starting to show their gray winter plumage.  They should be heading out in a couple of weeks for the Gulf of Mexico

This weekend it was the 2nd Annual Wife Carrying, Wife Ferrying and Pike Carrying contest in Torpy Park to raise money for Winter Park.  It was quite an event to watch!  This is not a picture of Troy and Jenny!

It is the end of the blackberry season in the North and we headed off for one last afternoon to pick for Jam.  We did not get many rasberries this year so we were eager to fill the freezer with Blackberries.  How eager?  Eager enough to share the patch with a bear

There are advantages of sharing a patch with a bear.  They leave trails through the pricker bushes that are rather wide.  Without this help it would be a miserable experience wading through pricker bushes for berries

Fritz the winner of our ice out contest 2008 is one of the best Muskie Hunters on Lower Kaubashine next to Jimmy and Al was a having a small problem finding crappie. A blonde happened to over hear his dilema and whispered in his ear, Slip Bobber and 12 – 15 feet of water and look what happened

Why does Muskie grow such a nice patch of moss on it every year.  I have no idea.  We have tried many remedies and even tried ignoring it.  This year we are giving Vinegar a try.  It worked on a parch of poison ivy earlier along with salt.

One of the nice things about running your own business is the ability to choose how to spend a warm afternoon in the fall.  We will report the progress on this endeavor as the moss hopefully dies

Geocaching the Bearskin

After being stuck in the house for a rainy Saturday it was time to head out on a Geo Cache

We headed out to a part of the Bearskin Trail I had never been on. We caught the trail down by Pinewood Golf Course South of Hazelhurst about 5 miles. 2 moms, 5 kids and 2 dogs following a GPS .91 miles to the cache.

One maple tree in particular was in full color. Others were just starting to turn

It has not frozen yet so the ferns are still alive and make a big contrast with the bright red leaves

Sign talking about the Bearskin Creek that runs along the trail. That is what makes this end of the trail so pretty. Both sides have water flowing past and the trees are thick almost coming over the trail

Our favorite part was the observation deck that looks out at the Bearskin Creek watershed

Riley finding his own trail. He was in doggie heaven. Poe found something that smelled ungodly to roll in but I did not discover it til 9pm when he laid next to the couch and the odor wafed to my nose. With rain coming down he and I were out in the yard with the garden hose and my coconut butter shampoo. His nose was out of joint still this morning over the unexpected bath but our noses were all much happier.

Cache found and we headed home

If you have only taken the trail from Hazelhurst to Minocqua you really need to try the southern end of the trail it is I think much prettier.
